Surrealist to admire

29 Jun

René Magritte (1898 – 1967)

Belgian surrealist artist. Famous for witty and thought-provoking images. His work challenges observers’ preconditioned perceptions of reality.

“It is a union that suggests the essential mystery of the world. Art for me is not an end in itself, but a means of evoking that mystery” – René Magritte

Magritte’s works are mysterious and full of magic, a magic that is created by the combination of his realistic depiction of everyday objects and the discrepancy to the known, to the perception of everyday life. He diverges proportions, changes the image’s texture  He combines real objects with abstract figurations.

Artists who have been influenced by Magritte’s work are: Andy Warhol, Jasper Johns, Ed Ruscha, John Baldessari and many others.
